Pyrenomycetes* are fungi with perithecia, small flask-shaped fruit-bodies that contain asci and they constitute a large part of the sac-fungi or Ascomycota. This species rich group of mainly decomposers, plant, animal and fungal parasites are ecologically important but little known in Norway and may contain many new species and many species.

In his treatise Taxonomy of the Pyrenomycetes Luttrell wrote that the classification of the ascomycetes is a difficult taxonomic problem. Nevertheless, he undertook the analysis of ascomycete literature to that time with a focus on pyrenomycete systematics and with the intent of taxonomic : D.

Reynolds. This is an exciting time to produce an overview of the systematics and evolution of the fungi.

Molecular and subcellular characters have given us our first view of the true phylogeny of the fungi. The systematic chapters present detailed illustrated treatments of specific fungal groups with the authors' interpretation of the systematics of that group as well as a survey of Reviews: 1.

Introduction. Pyrenomycetes * are fungi that occur primarily as perithecial ascomata (flask-shaped fruiting bodies) on a wide range of substrates including soil, dung, leaf litter, decaying wood, as well as other fungi. These “little black dots” comprise the largest numbers of fungi in the Phylum Ascomycota.

Sordariomycetes are also known as Pyrenomycetes, from the Greek πυρἠν - 'the stone of a fruit' - because of the usually somewhat tough texture of their tissue.

Sordariomycetes possess great variability in morphology, growth form, and habitat. Most have perithecial (flask-shaped) fruiting bodies, (unranked): Sordariomyceta. Text-book of the diseases of trees, (London, Offices of "Country life" [etc., ]), by Robert Hartig and H.
